Salt Spray Testing

Salt spray testing (ASTM B117) simulates accelerated corrosion in a controlled laboratory environment, allowing engineers to compare coating systems and predict real-world durability without waiting years for actual field performance. Parts are exposed continuously to a warm salt fog in a chamber, and technicians check them at regular intervals, typically 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 hours, for signs of corrosion creepage, base metal exposure, or coating failure.

A coating system that survives 5000 hours of salt spray testing generally indicates 10+ years of protection in typical atmospheric environments, though actual service life depends heavily on actual environmental severity. This accelerated testing helps engineers validate that their chosen corrosion resistance strategy, whether powder coat, wet paint, or galvanizing, meets project specifications before committing to production.

Routine salt spray testing of production samples provides quality assurance that coating processes remain in control and coating suppliers maintain specification compliance.
