The material being welded, as opposed to the filler metal added during the process. Base metal properties including chemistry, thickness, condition, and heat treatment drive welding procedure selection.
The base metal dictates the entire welding strategy, from the selection of compatible filler metal to the preheat temperature required before the first tack weld is struck. High-strength steels and aluminum alloys demand different metallurgical approaches than mild carbon steel, particularly regarding heat input control and post-weld thermal cycles.
The chemical composition, grain size, and work-hardening state of the base metal directly influence how the heat-affected zone responds to thermal cycling, ultimately determining the ductility and fatigue performance of the finished assembly. Specifying the correct base material thickness and condition upfront prevents costly rework and ensures the final weldment performs as intended in service.
