Weld Inspection
Evaluation of completed welds to verify conformance to specified quality requirements. Common methods include visual inspection, dye penetrant, magnetic particle, radiographic, and ultrasonic testing.
Weld inspection encompasses visual examination of bead geometry, surface finish, and obvious defects, supplemented by nondestructive testing methods that reveal internal discontinuities invisible to the eye. Radiographic testing produces X-ray images showing internal porosity, lack-of-fusion, and misalignment; ultrasonic testing directs sound waves into the weld and detects reflections from cracks and voids; magnetic particle examination reveals surface and near-surface defects in ferrous materials; and dye penetrant testing uses capillary action to detect fine surface cracks.
The selection of inspection methods depends on the severity of service conditions, accessibility of weld zones, and regulatory requirements; a routine structural beam might require only visual inspection, while a pressure vessel or aerospace component demands comprehensive ultrasonic and radiographic evaluation. Our quality assurance programs include certified inspectors, documented procedures, and equipment calibration to ensure that structural weldments are verified to meet the stringent standards required for safe, long-term service.
