Weld Certification

Weld certification documents that a welding procedure specification has been tested to destruction, typically a test coupon is welded using the documented procedure and then sectioned, tensile tested, and examined for discontinuities, and the results meet or exceed the minimum mechanical properties mandated by AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX. Individual welder certification requires demonstrating proficiency by successfully completing a test coupon within strict dimensional and quality tolerances; the certification is usually limited to the specific process, positions, and material thickness ranges proven during testing.

Certified procedures and qualified welders provide the contractual assurance that structural weldments will perform as designed; contractors, inspectors, and owners all rely on these certifications to confirm that established standards have been met. Maintaining certification through periodic retraining, documentation control, and adherence to approved WPS specifications is essential for any fabrication shop serving safety-critical or regulated industries.
