Bend Line
The line on the flat blank along which the material is bent. Accurate bend line placement relative to the back gauge ensures that the formed dimensions match the design intent.
The bend line serves as the visual and physical boundary where the material will deform and fold during a press brake operation. On a flat pattern drawing, the bend line shows exactly where the operator or CNC back gauge must position the workpiece against the V-die to achieve the intended dimensions.
Accurate placement is critical because even a small offset, say 0.010 inches, can cascade into dimensional errors on multi-bend parts, especially those with tight tolerances. In press brake operations, programmers use CAD-generated flat patterns that precisely locate each bend line based on the calculated bend allowance and material properties. Experienced operators verify the first article against the drawing before running production quantities.
