Back Gauge
A programmable stop behind the press brake die that positions the workpiece for accurate, repeatable bends. CNC press brakes feature multi-axis back gauges capable of plus or minus 0.001 inch positioning accuracy for consistent production quality.
The back gauge functions as the precision reference point for consistent, repeatable bending operations across entire production runs. When properly programmed using 3D CAD files or direct measurement inputs, it eliminates the need for manual setup and measurement that causes variation between parts.
Modern CNC back gauges can achieve positioning tolerances better than 0.001 inch, allowing manufacturers to hold tight bend-to-edge dimensions critical in assembled products and customer-specified enclosures. The back gauge finger design varies based on part geometry, some applications require side-angle fingers for Z-bends or offset bends, while others need special stops for box forming.
Programmable back gauge systems are particularly valuable when forming complex bends in rapid succession, as the operator simply loads the next blank while the machine repositions automatically.
