Gusset Plate
A flat plate welded at the intersection of two or more structural members to reinforce the joint, distribute load, and resist buckling or rotation. Gussets are sized by structural analysis and are a common feature in weldments and structural connections.
Gusset plates are the silent engineers behind durable weldments, providing the reinforcement and load distribution that prevents joint failure under stress. Without gussets, connections between perpendicular members like beam-to-column joints would rely entirely on fillet welds, which concentrate stress at the weld toe and can fail prematurely under cyclic loading or shock impact.
