Blank
A flat metal piece cut to a specific flat pattern size for use in subsequent operations such as press braking, stamping, roll forming, or welding. Blanking is often the first step in a multi-operation sheet metal fabrication process.
A blank is the precise intermediate product that bridges the gap between raw sheet material and the final component, and its quality directly determines success in downstream operations. For instance, a blank destined for press braking must have flat, square edges and consistent dimensions so that when it is bent into a bracket or enclosure, all edges align properly and the final part meets print specifications.
Blanks cut via CNC shearing are ideal for near-net-shape manufacturing because the cutting precision minimizes waste and secondary trimming. In multi-operation fabrication, blanks may also be sent to CNC machining for drilling, or to welding for assembly, making the accuracy of the blank a critical factor in the overall quality chain.
