Weld Symbol

Home > Glossary > Weldments, Bollards & Guards > Weld Symbol

An AWS-standardized engineering drawing notation that specifies weld type (fillet, groove, spot), size, length, spacing, and additional requirements. Accurate interpretation of weld symbols is required for fabricating weldments to design intent.

Weld symbols are the precise language through which structural engineers communicate welding requirements to fabricators, ensuring that every joint is executed exactly as designed to carry intended loads safely.

The AWS (American Welding Society) symbol system uses standardized notation to specify critical parameters: a fillet weld symbol with "1/2" designation means a triangular fillet weld with 1/2-inch leg length, while "L20" notation indicates a 20-inch length, and "SP" designation denotes a spot weld pattern.

Different symbol variations convey additional meaning, a weld symbol on one side of the reference line versus both sides indicates whether the weld is applied to the near side or far side of the joint, a distinction that affects joint design and load distribution. Misinterpretation of weld symbols can result in undersized welds (potential joint failure), oversized welds (excess cost and material), or incorrect weld processes applied to joints designed for specific heat-affected zone properties.

Our fabrication team meticulously follows all welding specifications derived from symbol interpretation, verifying weld size, type, and coverage before final inspection and release, ensuring your structural assemblies perform flawlessly.
