Cutting Head
The component of a laser cutting machine that focuses and directs the laser beam onto the workpiece. The cutting head maintains a precise standoff distance and delivers assist gas concentrically around the beam.
The cutting head is the removable component that mounts to the laser cutting machine's motion system and houses the focusing lens, nozzle, and often the standoff distance sensor. The cutting head is where the laser beam is focused to a tight point and directed at the material, making its design and condition critical to cut quality.
Different cutting head designs accommodate different nozzle sizes and types, and the focal length varies based on the optics used. Over time, the lens accumulates dust and carbon residue from the cutting process, requiring regular cleaning or replacement to maintain beam focus and cut quality. A contaminated lens slowly degrades cut quality, producing ragged edges or wider kerf width.
Preventive maintenance of the cutting head, including regular lens cleaning and inspection, is essential for reliable, consistent laser cutting performance.
